1. How to delete your account
In plain English: Delete it yourself from Settings → Account → Delete Account. If you can't sign in, email us to request deletion.
The fastest and preferred way is to delete your account yourself in the app. If you can’t access your account, email us and we’ll process the request.
- In the MemoryMaps app or on the web (preferred): go to Settings → Account → Delete Account (on the web, memorymaps.app/dashboard/settings/account), then confirm. Deletion begins immediately.
- By email (if you can’t sign in): email hello@memorymaps.appfrom the email address on your account with the subject “Delete my account,” and we will process the request on your behalf.
2. What is deleted
In plain English: Your profile, your memories (photos and videos), and all of your social activity.
When your account is deleted, we permanently remove:
- Your profile — display name, username, bio, and avatar.
- Your memories — photos, videos, captions, tags, places, and their associated location data.
- Your social activity — follows, likes, comments, saved memories, and notification settings.
- Your authentication data, including your password and any linked Google or Apple sign-in identifiers.
- Your access to your conversations, and your name on the messages you sent. Note: the text of a message you already sent to another person stays in that person’s copy of the conversation, but is no longer attributed to you (it appears from a deleted user) — we can’t delete another person’s copy of a message you sent them.
3. What is kept, and for how long
In plain English: A 30-day grace period, then permanent deletion. Username reserved 90 days. Unverified accounts auto-delete in 72 hours. Limited records kept only where the law requires.
- 30-day grace period. Your profile and content are hidden immediately, and the account is queued for permanent deletion 30 days later. You can cancel the deletion at any time during those 30 days by signing back in and confirming that you want to restore your account.
- Unverified accounts. If you created an account but never verified your email, the account and its data are automatically deleted after 72 hours — no action needed.
- Username reservation (90 days). After permanent deletion, your username is reserved for 90 days to prevent impersonation, then released.
- Server logs (30 days). Request logs used for security and abuse prevention are retained for 30 days, then purged.
- Backups. Data may persist in disaster-recovery backups for a limited period after deletion. Backups are not used to restore deleted accounts outside of a disaster-recovery scenario.
- Legally required records.Where we are legally obligated to retain records — for example, records related to reported child sexual abuse material under 18 U.S.C. § 2258A — we retain them as required by law even after account deletion.
4. Deleting some data without deleting your account
In plain English: You can delete individual memories and messages, deactivate, or export your data — without deleting your account.
You don’t have to delete your whole account to remove data:
- Delete individual memories, photos, videos, or messages directly in the app at any time.
- Deactivate your account (hides your profile and content) from Settings → Account, and reactivate later — no data is deleted.
- Request a machine-readable copy of your data from our Data Export page.
5. Contact
